How You Can Add Voice to Your Content

So many writers struggle with letting their true personality show through in their work. This likely began when we were younger and in school where we were taught to write in an acceptable manner. Many writers who were taught to write in that manner, still find themselves unable to shake that habit. What this means is that there are a number of writers who write in a dry, narrator style that leaves readers wanting more. If you’re one of these writers, I’m going to share with you some ways in which you can make your content more enjoyable and give it the voice that it needs.

  • Find What You Enjoy – To help break you out of the old school writing habits that you may have, you should find something that you enjoy reading. Whether it makes you laugh, feel, or think it evokes some type of emotional response; and that is exactly what your writing needs. If you enjoy a particular blog look at how the writer started their post. The type of language the y used, and what keeps you coming back for more. This will provide you with the insight you need to make your writing more appealing to your readers.
  • Try Free Writing – This process is often used to help stimulate creativity and ideas. To use this technique, simply sit down with a blank piece of paper or blank document on your computer and write on a topic. What you write doesn’t have to make a lot of sense; it is simply a technique that will help open your creative mind and let your true voice shine. You may be surprised at the amount of content you can create and how many ideas you come up with.
  • Focus – If your writing tends to be too vague, you will likely lose your voice. If you’re not sure of what you’re trying to say and how you’re going to say it, your readers won’t be able to follow the topic or leave with anything valuable. To get rid of the curse of being vague, you should choose a clear focus for your content and go from there. The more focused your ideas are the easier it will be for your content to be understood and enjoyed by readers.
  • Read Out Loud – This may sound like a crazy technique, but reading your content out loud is a great way to notice any areas where you may stumble or that simply don’t make sense. As you’re reading, make corrections and improvements. You will also be able to notice if you have given your content the voice you intended and if it is something that your readers will enjoy.

If you feel that your writing technique needs improvement, I hope that the tips I listed above help. Writing can be a very difficult process, but with some work and attention to detail, you will be rewarded with content that will entertain and evoke emotions from your readers.
